In April 2007, Morocco’s new Amogdoul wind farm, situated on CapSim, 15km south of Essaouira, started operations, thereby bringing the country’s total installed capacity up to 124 MW. Other wind farms in Morocco include a 50 MW project in El Koudia El Baida (Tlat Taghramt - Province of Tetouan) installed in 2000, followed by a 3.5 MW project at the same site in 2001.


The annual electricity production from wind energy now stands at 450 GWh, accounting for around 2 per cent of Morocco’s power consumption.


The Moroccan National Programme for Development of Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (PNDEREE) is to raise the contribution of renewable energies to 20 per cent of the national electricity consumption and 10 per cent of primary energy by 2012 (the figures are currently 7.9 per cent and 3.4  per cent respectively, including large hydro power installations).


With 3,000 km of coast line and high average wind speeds (7.5-9.5 m/s in the south and 9.5-11 m/s in the north), wind power is one of the most promising sectors for renewable energy generation in Morocco. Taking into account this vast potential, the Moroccan government decided to raise the wind energy capacity from the current 124 MW to 1,000 MW by 2012. Between 2008 and 2010, the Moroccan government is planning to add 600 MW of installed wind energy capacity near the towns of Tetouan, Tarfaya and Taza.
